Dear friends !
I would like to ask you for your opinion. A couple of years ago I bought an entire (postal stationery cover) from a Belgian dealer. It disappeared in one of my drawers until I found it again some days ago. I remember to have it bought because of the ball which can be seen on its front side.
As I was not sure if it is a Volleyball or not, I started investigating, and with the help of my friend Thomas Lippert from Germany I got into contact with Mr. Nikolay Markov from Russia. I sent him my questions and here is his reply:

Hello my friend !
Many thanks for your e-mail.
About the cover: It shows the “Palace of Sport” in Rostov-na-Donu (Rostov on the Don). It was sent on March 5th, 1969 by
Ljuda Chvorost from Salsk in the region of Rostov to Sofia, Bulgaria, and is directed to the “3rd form of the girl’s school”.
I checked the Olympic reference book. There was a very good Volleyball team in Rostov-na-Donu (“Sport Club of the Army”) in the 1960ies and 1970ies (the cover was issued in 1968). It played in the higher league of the championship of the Soviet Union.
One player of this team was in the Soviet national team and participated in the 1964 Tokio Olympic Games. His name was Valeri Kalatschikhin. He won the Olympic Gold Medal together with his team. So I am sure that the team of Rostov played in this sport palace. And the ball on the cover is most likely a Volleyball ball.
There were also strong handball teams in Rostov, both men's and women's. But handball became an Olympic sport untill 1972 and that is why handball teams began to receive help and attention later (not at the time when this cover was produced).
I hope that this will answer your question.
You may give my e-mail address to your friends if they need help with USSR volleyball items.

Do you think we should include this entire in the Volleyball catalogue of postal stationery items ?
