From 1932 to 1970, Oman was ruled by the reclusive
Sultan Said bin Taimur, whose repressive policies sparked a revolt in the Dhofar
region in 1965. In 1970 he was overthrown in a Civil War by his son, Qaboos.
Loyal troops of the former Sultan kept on fighting untill around 1976 and issued
stamps inscribed “State of Oman” and “Dhufar”. They were not recognized
internationally. Even after 1976 these stamps were issued at least
untill 1980.
The issues for the Olympic Games 1984 from Bernera,
Dhufar, Eritrea, Grunay, Oman and Staffa were produced by the Englishman Mr.
Feigenbaum, who also was responsible for various “local” issues. Because
of that various countries filed lawsuits against him.
